Our History

In the heart of Bangarpet, amidst the bustling streets and lively community, stood a sacred haven known as the Sacred Heart Church. But the journey to its present glory was a tale woven with threads of faith, devotion, and miracles.

It all began in 1893, when the seeds of faith were sown in the form of St. Antony’s Chapel, nestled under the patronage of St. Sebastian Church in Coramandal. As the years passed and the congregation grew, the chapel found a new home at Holy Cross Church in Beml Nagar, where it flourished as a sub-parish, nurturing the souls of the faithful.

In 1951, a magnificent milestone was reached as the foundations were laid for the construction of the Sacred Heart Church. Rising majestically along the Kolar Main Road of Bangarpet, it became a beacon of hope and solace for all who sought refuge within its walls.

Under the watchful gaze of the Archdiocese of Bangalore and the KGF Deanery, the church became a sanctuary of tradition and Tamil Mass, presided over by esteemed priests such as Rev. Fr. Chinnappa, Rev. Fr. Gregoria, and Rev. Fr. Lawrence Norahana. Their presence brought comfort to the weary and strength to the faithful, as they ministered to the needs of the congregation with love and compassion.

In 2007, a new chapter began as the administration of the church was entrusted to the OMI Congregation from Chennai, led by Rev. Fr. Jeevarathanium. With their guidance, the church continued to flourish, with Rev. Fr. Prakasam spearheading initiatives for its growth and development.

But it wasn’t just the faithful who sought solace within the sacred walls of the church. Opposite the Government General Hospital, patients and their attenders found comfort in the prayers offered to St. Antony, lighting candles and laying flowers in gratitude for healing and hope. Maternity patients, in particular, found solace in the prayers offered for safe deliveries and healthy babies.

As the church stood sentinel on the main road of Kolar, travelers and commuters sought its blessings for safe journeys. Every passing vehicle whispered a prayer, seeking the intercession of the Sacred Heart for protection and guidance.

Today, the Sacred Heart Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and devotion. With its towering statue of the Sacred Heart, arms outstretched in blessing, it continues to watch over the faithful, hearing their prayers and bestowing blessings upon all who seek its shelter. And thus, the legacy of the Sacred Heart Church lives on, a beacon of light and hope in a world filled with darkness.
